Self-Publishing Quick Guide

 The steps to self-publishing

So, you want to self-publish. If you're reading this, you probably already have a manuscript. If not, get writing!

If you've finished writing...

Firstly, beware of scams! There are websites that offer to publish your book for a huge upfront cost. They may even masquerade as well know print-on-demand services. Alternatively, they may want a cut of sales, but don't do a good job of formatting, promotion or cover design. Run! You can do this yourself for free!

If you're still considering using a company like this, as yourself: can this person prove a track record of successful books? Make sure you see actual evidence and don't take words at face value!

Now it's time to get it formatted! Whatever self-publishing service you use will likely have instructions on how to do this. Here's the one for Kindle Direct. You can also find a freelancer to do this for you on websites such as Fiverr. You need to do this before you can get your cover designed as you'll need the page count to generate a book template.

It'll look something like this!

The designer will need this to make a cover with the right dimensions. (And please, do get a designer to do it!)

Don't do this.

When you've got your formatted book and your cover uploaded, It's time for the technical parts. If your book is a physical print it'll need an ISBN, which Kindle Direct provides for free! You also need to think about the listing description for your book. The keywords  and details you use are essential for the right readers to find your book!

Be sure to use the preview option and thoroughly check for formatting and quality issues! When all this is done, you can publish! It will take a while to process, so sit tight!

Now, you're fairly likely to find some problems and mistakes in your first print. Fret not! This is part of the process. Get some friends and family to check through the printed book and make notes, and then make some changes. Rinse and repeat as required!

Congrats, you're a self-published author!

Not selling as well as you'd like?
  • If you're not getting sales at all, you may need to review your keywords and details. Also, be sure to promote your book!
  • Did you get a good designer to do your cover? Are you sure?
  • If you're getting bad reviews, take note of what's being said and apply it to your future work. Dismiss any comments that are just cruel or rude. Failure is part of the creative process!
